Biography

Jacob Schoenle is an American multi-instrumentalist, music theorist, and composer of chamber and orchestral music. His style prioritizes harmony and groove in a way described by colleagues as witty and effective, and draws inspiration from nature, philosophy, and mathematics. His music has been performed around the globe by world-class ensembles including the Mivos Quartet, the icarus Quartet, and the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.

For his achievement in the field of composition, Jacob was a recipient of the John Bavicchi/Beverly Lewis Award in both 2020 and 2021. His piece for solo piano titled Irreversible Nature won Honorable Mention in the 2021 TNM Young Composer Competition, and his Sylvan Suite for flute and piano won second prize in the May 2023 Caneres Competition. He has accepted invitations to a number of international composition festivals, including the Vienna Summer Music Festival, the Sofia Symphonic Summit, and the Lake George Music Festival. Jacob studied at Berklee College of Music with Beth Denisch and at Carnegie Mellon University with Nancy Galbraith; he is currently pursuing his DMA at the University of Georgia under Dr. Adrian Childs. The premiere of his latest work for wind ensemble, Passing Through Rain, is planned for April 2024 at Texas A&M University–Kingsville.

When not composing, Jacob enjoys reading and spending time in nature. He is also a partner in a small board game company from Buffalo, NY, serving as their graphic designer and play-tester. His experimental rock band Snow Child—comprised of longtime friends from around the US—released their debut album in May 2023.
